Chimney Brush

Use a chimney brush at home. A good sweep keeps everything clean.

Shopping for a chimney brush is one of those things that nobody really enjoys doing, but has to at some point if their house happens to have a chimney.

Who doesn’t love the idea of a fireplace in the home?  Watching TV or curling up with a good book by a warm fireplace is one of the most relaxing experiences in existence.

Still, fireplaces require a bit of maintenance, as do chimneys.  Without the use of a chimney brush to clean it out once in a while, things can easily get messy.  Not only is it likely to clog up with residue, but lack of attention can easily cause your chimney’s inner lining to wear down, making things all the more difficult.  The cost of replacing a chimney down the line (not to mention the time spent) far outweighs the comparatively modest cost of a chimney brush.

There are a few things you’ll need to know when it comes to shopping for chimney brushes.  Failing to pay attention to any of these factors might leave you with a chimney cleaner that’s simply not practical for your needs.   Let’s take a look at some of the things you’ll need to know when buying your chimney brush.

Most importantly, you’ll need to measure the inside of your chimney in advance (or at least know the measurements) before deciding which chimney brush to go with.  Depending on the shape, you’ll need something that you know fits it well.  They make chimney brushes in different shapes to accommodate this.  Some are round, some are square, and others are wire-like in nature.  This is a mistake that many first time buyers make, as it’s an easy thing to overlook.

Metal chimneys and some other ones actually might require you to take your chimney cap off before you’re able to figure this out, which shouldn’t be too difficult but needs to be done nonetheless.

Here’s another word for those with a metal chimney that I’d like to share.   The material you choose to go with matters for those of you with metal chimneys.  Basically, you’ll want to look for a poly chimney brush.  The surface of this type is much more gentle, as the others could easily scratch up the inside of your chimney.

As far as masonry chimneys go, it’s important to measure the inner flue liner both ways.  If the chimney brush you buy is too small, it simply won’t reach the surface of each end.

Your decision to look for chimney brushes is a wise one.  Not using one can easily lead to the deterioration of your chimney, and even puts your house at increased risk of a fire as it wears down.

Short of recommending any single brand, you’ll see that most of them are similar in quality.  The most important factor is knowing in advance what you’ll need as far as size goes.  From there, you’ll have instant access to the many great deals available online.

May your search be an easy one, in addition to mention your preparations.
